Weekly Note

The last week of March brings another batch of specially curated Frank Lloyd Wright-related news to enjoy. As late spring and summer nears, there will be plenty of exciting architecture tours to experience and celebrate Wright's 150th anniversary, so stay tuned for more on that in the coming weeks.

The Headlines

Explore Robie House During April After Hours

The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust will host its semiannual After Hours gathering at Wright’s Prairie-style masterpiece, the Frederick C. Robie House in April.

Robie House will be open 5-8 p.m. every Friday in April, beginning April 7, and continuing on April 14, 21 and 28. Robie House is located at 5757 S. Woodlawn Ave. in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. A small jazz band will perform. Admission is $30 for Trust Members and $35 for nonmembers. Advance reservations are recommended.

During the evening, guests will have the chance to explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s quintessential Prairie style home at their leisure. April After Hours allows access to Robie House’s balconies (weather permitting) and private spaces, which include three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the third floor. Pulled Wright From The Brink

When you buy a portion of a crumbling national treasure such as the bedroom wing of Frank Lloyd Wright's Coonley Estate in Riverside, IL, you are taking on quite a challenge. Luckily, John Farneda and Stephanus Greeff are not afraid to take on such a task. Hopefully they'll continue the fantastic work they've started on this significant restoration. Read more.

Throughout his career, Mr. Wright's furniture design was inexorably linked with his greater philosophies about design and architecture, seeing his buildings as total works of art where every element, from the exterior shell to the interior, was connected. Special Tunnel Tour Of Dow Home and Studio

During the months of March and April, Saturday tours at the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio will include a trip through an underground tunnel that connects the home and the studio, a feature that is only available to view at certain times of the year. Read more.

How Wright's "Tree of Life" Windows Are Made

Ever wonder what is involved in recreating Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic "Tree of Life" stained glass windows? Each window takes about a month to construct, with 10,000 individual caming pieces, a week of glass cutting, and a few days to solder everything together. See the intricate process here. Read more.

A Lesson From Frank Lloyd Wright: Patterns Of Nature

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation's Whirling Arrow blog recently posted an sample of the book Art and Philosophy of Frank Lloyd Wright written by architect Vernon Swaback, a former apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. Home & Garden News recently ran an article about a series of upcoming tours at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. In honor of Wright's 150th birthday anniversary, the iconic house over the waterfall will host a variety of educational commemorative activities. Read more.

Frank Lloyd Wright Trust Summer Design Camp

Frank Lloyd Wright Trust's Summer Design Camp is offering students from third grade through high school the chance to work in the drafting room at Frank Lloyd Wright's Oak Park Studio. Led by professional architects, artists, and designers, kids will have the opportunity to work with design in the very room Mr. Wright worked and taught in. Read more.

In Memoriam: Joe Fabris

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation posted the news that Joe Fabris, a beloved member of the Taliesin community as appentice and mentor, has passed away peacefully at Taliesin in Wisconsin at the age of 99. Joe came to the Fellowship in 1948 from Canada, and took part in much of the construction at Taliesin and Taliesin West. Read more.

Open House At Wright's Weltzheimer/Johnson

Frank Lloyd Wright's Weltzheimer/Johnson House at Oberlin College was completed in 1949 and was the first Usonian house in Ohio. If you have not been lucky enough to see it yet, then plan to attend an open house on Sunday April 2, 2017 between 12-5 pm for $5 per person. Read more.
