There was no shortage of significant Wright-related news events that took place in the past week, including the outcome of the UNESCO World Heritage Wright site nomination. Catch-up on this and other items of architectural and design interest curated from the week's events.

The Headlines

UNESCO Wright Bid "Referred"

As the attempted coup flamed out over the weekend in Turkey, the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Istanbul completed its consideration of the United States’ World Heritage List serial nomination of a representative list of works by Frank Lloyd Wright. Unfortunately, the Committee decided to "refer" the nomination for further discussion. Out of the four possible outcomes, getting "referred" means the US needs to re-examine and rework the nomination for another future try. A similar effort for listing works by architect Le Corbusier took multiple tries, too. Read more.

Moving Mäntylä

Mother Nature Network posts an in-depth article on the efforts undertaken to ensure the long-term future of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed R.W. Lindholm residence (known as Mäntylä, which is Finnish for “house among the pines"). As the home languished on the market and was being increasingly encroached upon by development, the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy with the Lindholm heirs worked to disassemble and move the building to its new home in Polymath Park near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Iannelli's Fountain Of The Pioneers Gets National Register Listing

Pamela Hall O'Connor, Hon. AIA, Preservation Practices and advisor for the National Trust for Historic Preservation recently sent word that she was advised by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office that the National Park Service listed Alfonso Iannelli's Fountain of the Pioneers complex in Kalamazoo, Michigan's Bronson Park on the National Register of Historic Places—at the National Level of Significance—on June 28, 2016. The Fountain complex is now Kalamazoo’s only National Register-listed resource to have achieved this high level designation. Congrats to everyone who helped make this designation a reality! McCartney House Memories

Here's a fascinating digitized copy of a booklet written by Helen E. McCartney, who commissioned a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in the Parkwyn Village community in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In it, she describes her remembrances of building and living in the 1951 Usonian home. Read more.

Drummond-designed Coonley Kindergarten in Brookfield, Illinois is on the market for $335,000 and will have an open house on Saturday July 30, 2016 from noon to 2pm.
